Tools were used for farming and for making things the colonists needed. Farmers needed tools to plant their crops and harvest their crops. The blacksmith used hammers and tongs to hold and shape heated iron to make things that were needed. Cabinetmakers used hand tools made of wood and metal, and a lathe to make furniture. Simple hand tools were used to make everything, even houses.
