Most of the colonists were farmers that grew corn and other crops on their farm and raised livestock. The Native Americans showed the colonists how to farm and plant corn. It was an important crop that was used in many ways. The colonists raised other things on their farms like pumpkins and squash. They had brought seeds with them all the way from Europe. They also planted apple trees. Some farmers raised pigs for bacon, pork, and sausage. There were no refrigerators in colonial times so farmers had to smoke, salt, pickle, or dry food to keep it from spoiling.
